Ioan Pop si grupul Iza
Song and Dances from Maramuresh County
- Hori si zicăli morosenesti

'Some of the pieces on are recorded in the conventional way in the studio. This way violinist Petrica Giurgi can display to the full his virtuosity, his consistently delicate tone, his refined improvisation. But most of the melodies were recorded at a 'bauta' (party with music and dance) in the village of Hoteni.'

Music for String Ensembles: The Folk Musicians of Clejani -
Lăutarii din Clejani I

'The lăutari of Clejani are perhaps the most inspired and fervent of all folk musicians in Romania. The exuberant, musical style of their native southern region has certainly stimulated them in this respect. We must also take into consideration the fact that the village is an old "music school" of Muntenia which trains its disciples by requiring their total implication in the art of their choice: sound, dance, gesture, pantomime. But it would be unfair to ignore their superb endowment. The traits they all have in common are imagination and impetuosity. Each musician, however, has his own distinct personality, inclinations, aptitudes, qualities and performances.'

Peasant Musicians of Codru, Maramures -
Ceatarasi din Codru, Maramures

'The leader of the ensemble is Dumitru Iederan, the best instrumentalist from Codru. He learned to play from a famous violinist, Isidor Serban (main role in the movie Gadgo dillo) from the village of Stana. Afterwards he studied the classic violin. He came back to the peasant music because he felt he cannot leave it without failure. Iederan is real conservatory. He thinks is that the music of Codru has to be preserved in his pure and beauty rural aspect inherited from long on. His opinion could be contested, of course; but what it really does matter is the fact that his music is really beautiful.'

Grupul IZA
Christmas in Maramuresh -
Crăciun în Maramures

'On Christmas Eve, homes are spick-and-span, tables are brightly laid, and the hosts stands waiting for the waits. From dusk to dawn the carolling goes on, relayed by children to youths and finally to grown-ups and the old. The youths - lads, lasses, and musicians - group together around kinship, friendship, and neighbourhood. They go singing along the village lanes in the accompaniment of violins, guitars and kettledrums.'

Grupul IZA
Romanian, Ukrainian, and Jewish Music from Maramuresh -
Muzică românească, ucraineană si evreiască din Maramures

'Ioan Pop, nicknamed Popicu by his wife and close relatives and friends, was born to a family of peasants in the Maramures village of Poienile Izei, where Bela Bartok himself stopped once for his research. As a child Popicu learned to play the instruments in fashion then: tilinca (shepherd's pipe), cetera (fiddle), bracia (prepared alto), zongora (guitar) and doba (drum). He began to play as a zongoras at parties and village Sunday dances.'

Ethnophonie is a small folk label from Romania run by Speranta Radulescu. They were these first to record the now famous ensemble the Taraf De Haidouks, and these recordings feature members of this band. Read an interview with Speranta.

But please don't think that these recordings are in any way inferior to the more recent releases by these musicians. All are of the the highest calibre, both technically and in execution - they are immensely enjoyable and on repeated listening bring even more enjoyment!
