'Simon Diaz is one of the most consistently successful - and passionate
- upholders of Venezuela's country music tradition. His songs carry the
smells and flavours and sounds of a country life-style which has virtually
disappeared, and they made him a national figure over 40 years ago. Now in
his 70s, Simon Diaz's voice is still instantly recognisable - and
capable of constant change. For tonadas like the ever-lasting 'Tonada de
Luna Ilena' he is accompanied by a delicately plucked cuatro guitar and
sings is a slow, baleful high falsetto....
.... His monumentally successful 'Caballo Viejo' (which was mutated by the
Gypsy Kings into 'Bamboleo') was a choppy ride interspersed with cheeky
yodels. Simon Diaz has one of the great Latin American voices...
