Of Puerto Rican-Chinese descent Chino Rodriguez was born in New York City on the 2nd February 1954. With his band
La Consagracion, Chino recorded two albums for SALSA RECORDS in the early 1970s: 'Maestro De Kung-Fu' and 'Si Te Vas Mi China'. Both albums were produced by Fania All-Stars member and salsa legend
Larry Harlow and feature his brother Andy Harlow on flute, sax and vibes. At that time
Chino Rodriguez y La Consagracion were nominated in the Latin NY Magazine's Award for best new
band.
This CD re-issue of the 'Maestro De Kung-Fu' album contains some of the best gritty mid-seventies salsa dura with plenty of swing. This is the first issue of the album on
CD.
Although the band are not currently active Chino still works in the Latin music industry with his management firm C.R.M. and Omni Latino Entertainment (Ole) booking latin music acts.
"Well I remember a few songs on the first project that I think date the
time. La Computadora was the first Latin recording to use a MOOG
synthesizer. And Larry Harlow played it, he didn’t even know how to turn
it on, it took about an hour, maybe more, to figure it out. The other was
Moonlight Serenade with Alfredo Rodriguez on piano. He was a Cuban Master,
what an artist, this guy would play and you would just be amazed, he would
just make you be amazed when you heard the sound come out of the piano - it
was true magic..." Chino Rodriguez
