Label - Ghetto Records,
re-issued by Latin Soul Records, New York
From record label:
"For the first time in over 30 years, the best LP that was originally
recorded on the rare and short-lived record label “Ghetto Records” in
1971 is now available on CD with a few extra bonuses.
Joe Acosta Dominates The Billboard Charts For 21 Weeks with his hit single “I Need Her” in 1971.
The single “I Need Her” peaked the number #1 spot for over 21 weeks dropping several singles from
Fania’s greatest artist to the bottom of the chart and some off the chart. Amazingly,
Acosta’s young musicians along with vocalist Joe Cruz dominated many hard-hitting
artists. Not even the late Ray Barretto (1929 – 2006) the King of
Hard Hands with his “Arrepientete” could triumph over Joe Acosta’s
single “I Need Her.” Willie Colon tried diligently with “Abuelita” but
remained in 5th place.
Orquesta Harlow came close at number 3 with “Arsenio” and the King
of Latin Soul, Joe Bataan at number 2 with his sweet soul tune “This
On August 14th 1971 the late Ralfi Pagan was number one with his hot
Latin Soul hit “Make it With You” but for only two weeks. Paul
Ortiz’s “Tender Love” achieved the number one spot for a couple of weeks
dropping Pagan’s single to number 2.
On September 18th Joe Acosta’s “I Need Her” trampled everyone down
to the bottom of the chart and remained victorious in the number one position for over 21 weeks. It was all
Fania Records offered a Recording contract to Acosta! Joe Acosta was offered to record for the legendary
Fania (Vaya or Bronco) we never found out which label, however being contracted
for the independent label “Ghetto Records” Acosta did not have the chance. I guess a
Fania producer realized, this bad ass Joe Acosta has to be part of the
Fania Family after all he dominated the charts for 21 weeks. You know what they say “If you can’t beat em’ have
them join the label and offer this bad ass son of bitch a contact.”
Ghetto Records officials knew what they had in their possession and
would never contemplate of losing the man that took the Billboard chart by storm for 21 weeks.
Ghetto Records officials threw an offer on the table for the release of
Joe Acosta’s contract. The deal never went through and as a result
Joe Acosta’s Orquesta never got to record for Fania.
And now ladies and gentlemen, after 35 years of being out of print, the album that caused the
Joe Acosta hurricane in 1971 that many
totally forgot about, destroying everything in it’s path (The Billboard Chart), including the
Fania All Star legends, THE POWER OF LOVE is now officially released on CD.
