'A Virtuoso of the Cimbalom'
(EDC164)
Star of many compilations of Romanian Folk Music CDs in the 'west' here is
a great collection showing the brilliance of Toni Iordache (pronounced 'yor-DUH-kay').
Accompaniment is by small folk orchestras.
'This CD includes dances, songs, melancholy Romanian folk-songs (doinas) and ballads from different parts of the country.
The cimbalom player Toni Iordache was one of the most gifted virtuosi of this instrument. He had a rich and varied repertoire, which he interpreted with particular sensitivity and musicality, with an excellent folk style, richly ornamented in love songs and demonstrating brilliant technique in dance numbers.
Born in 1942 in the village of Rildana (Illov district, near Bucharest) the son of a cimbalom player, Toni Iordache followed the musical tradition of his father, beginning at the age of four. His quite uncommon talent was soon recognized, and he was employed by the Romanian Radio and Television when only 12. At 16 he won the gold medal at the World Youth Festival in Vienna and, two years later, he was appointed as a member of the well-known folk-music orchestra 'Ciocarlia' (the Skylark) in Bucharest.
He toured most European countries (England, France, Russia, Germany, Hungary, Bulgaria, Norway, Sweden, etc.) and the United States.
From September 1970, he worked in collaboration with the small group of folk-music interpreters conducted by Gheorghe Zamfir, with whom he had already made a tour to France other European countries.
His outstanding artistry enabled him to win two gold medals: in Vienna as mentioned above (1959), and Sofia (1966) and to appear as guest soloist in Zoltan Kodaly's
'Hary János Suite' performed by the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo, in 1973.
Toni Iordache died in 1987, but the fascinating sound of his cimbalom remains in our souls, in the soul of all his listeners.'
