From record label:
"This CD reconstructs and restitutes a segment of the music that used to be performed
at Jewish parties in the region of Botosani (northern Moldavia, Romania) around the
mid-20th century.
The reconstruction is, of course, imperfect. Up to a certain point, it is natural, as the
instrumentalists featured on the CD are present-day people, too young to have listened
to, or performed, music for local Jews themselves; too dynamic to accept the calm
tempos of the past; too rigorous to adopt the slightly lascivious, multi-fluous timbres of
the Jewish style. Nevertheless, the tunes are the result of "musical archeology" that rules
out major errors, therefore they may be considered, without risk, as genuine.
However, listeners should not to be puzzled if they cannot find some of them in
collections of Jewish music from other East-European regions, even from the vicinity
of Botosani: the tunes in question may belong to a strictly local package of Israelite
repertoire.
The significance of this CD is, above all, in the sound-scape it reconstructs, or maybe
reinvents, with arguable skill. We hope that, all the same, there may be some interest in
the fact that, through it, the authors cast a light on the way in which the non-Jews from
Botosani perceived the music of their fellow citizens, memorized it, and- at least partly
- handed it down to subsequent generations."
