'Great playing that takes Bartók back to the future.
... The live atmosphere lends a particular edge to the recording, and the rhythmic, syncopated beat of a dancer's feet give some of the material tremendous urgency. Very fine stuff indeed''
Songlines magazine Nov/Dec 2004

This is the artists own release and has been imported from Hungary.

'A DREAM - Most of us began our music training with the Kodaly method. From that time on music has been a significant part of our lives. It has been our dream to convey what it is, that traditional folk music, [what] Kodaly and Bartok's music means to us. So, starting is 1999, we gave a concert each spring at the Academy of Music in Budapest presenting another side of Kodaly and Bartok's work.'
Muzsikas

The Budapest Spring Festival is one of the major events in the Hungarian cultural calendar. It was first organised over 20 years ago and it has grown into one of Eastern Europe's leading celebrations of the arts. The festival boasts a packed schedule of events across a wide range of cultural disciplines including orchestral concerts, chamber evenings, church concerts, dance, folk music and dance.

Muzsikás
Ensemble and Márta Sebestyén have regularly appeared at  the Spring Festival since 1999. This release is a compilation of concerts, mainly based on their appearances in 2003 where they performed together with the Pro Musica Choir.

'... Hungary's finest active folk troupe... inexhaustible themes handled by superb musicians.'
The Washington Post

'Hungary's leading folk ensemble...'
Gramaphone

'The ebullient music must have been a shock to anyone who thinks that Hungarian music is gypsy violins... ... this raucously beautiful music...'
New York Times

Customer Reviews:

Reviewer: John Hornsby
5 stars = Essential

This is a fabulous disc, a real "must have" in splendid sound (partly thanks to the unique acoustic of the Liszt Academy). It consists mainly of invigorating dance music, with some solo interventions by Marta Sebestyen and some haunting "a capella" pieces by Kodaly, sung by a girls' choir. There are also a couple of pieces which inspired Bartok, including one of the well-known Romanian dances, which I actually prefer in this form. I have only one regret: not to have been there on the night.
