Hungarian folk dance music from
Marosszek, now part of Romania. It was music from this region
that particularly inspired the Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodaly.
From record label:
'With this album we introduce the dance music of Marosszék through the music of two outstanding bands. The music accompanying dances in the Upper Maros Valley (the river valley from Déda to Marosvásárhely) is performed by a band from Vajdaszentivány. In contrast, the musicians from Magyarpéterlaka, also an Upper Maros Valley settlement, regularly play in the Nyárád Valley in addition to performing in the area surrounding their own village, and thus we have included the music of this other
region on the second disc.
On the first disc of this double CD edition we may hear recordings taken in the early 1980s from balls and weddings in Vajdaszentivány. Two dance sequences, a so-called "couple", follow one another, and the music to the dances is performed in accordance with local tradition in the following order: recruitment dance, fast turning dance, slow dance, mongrel dance, gypsy csárdás and "batuka" (a type of stamping dance).'
