Extract from sleeve notes:
"Sandor Fodor 'Netti', one of the most significant fiddlers ('primas') of Kalotaszeg, was born in 1922 in Gyalu (Gilau). First his father started to teach him to play the fiddle, then
Ferenc Varga, 'Csipas', the "Left-handed," taught him. In Szucsag (Suceag) he played together with
Ferenc 'Male' with Simon Kovacs 'Buralo'. From there he moved to Egres (Aghires), since 1980 he has been living in Bacs (Baciu). Because of the frequent movings he played in almost each village of Kalotaszeg, various effects influenced him while forming his individual style. Most of them were organically built in his playing: the restaurant-type, verbunkos tradition in the form of virtuosic variational ability which does not let him play the same tune twice the same way. The mixing and the mutual effects of Hungarian, Rumanian and Gypsy folk music resulted in such a mature, balanced way of playing and ornamentation that can be considered to be classical style Transylvanian instrumental folk music. With the strengthening of foreign influences (by means of radio, tv, record-player) there are more and more influences which have not assimilated themselves and which have intensified the fashion character of the live dance-music.
The material presented on the recording is played by the fiddler even today but it is already the smaller part of the active tune-material and in case of the musicians of the following generation some tunes had been handed down only in their representative form. The result of the almost two decades' dance-house movement is the fact that these tunes, even if in a changed environment, can survive like so many other things in our century.
Sandor Fodor is accompanied by dance-house musicians playing on the traditional string instruments of Transylvanian bands."
