Customer Reviews:
Reviewer: Erika B Volume 7: Uj Elo Nepzene - Exploring the Borders and Four Corners of Hungarian Traditional Music Hungarian traditional music arises from a fertile soil which transcends the limitations of physical borders. This CD contains music which expresses the spiritual essence of Hungary. Approximately half the CD is comprised of tanc-haz (dance house) style music and the remainder is an amalgamous collection of unusual and unique regional styles. There are bagpipe tunes, female solo laments, a female chorus, male ballads, merry tunes played on the zither or tekero, and Moldavian instrumentals present on Volume 7. One delightful surprise is the gypsy group, Amare Save who sing in authentic Romani and play the mandolin, guitar, and kanna. Once again, the Dance House Guild of Hungary has produced a gem which captures both the Central European charm and Central Asian roots of Hungarian traditional music. CONTENTS: The past and present dissolve when listening to Ifju Muzsikas play "Ritka es Suru Magyaros", a highly energetic dance house tune from Ordongosfuzes (Transylvania). Selection two drifts to Southwestern Hungary where the plucked and strummed primtambura and bracstambura, along with the accordion, create the staccato rhythms of Serbian origin. Tekero (Hurdy Gurdy) music from Del Alfold (Southern Great Plains), bagpipe tunes from Del-dunantuli (South Transdanubia) and trance-like shamanistic instrumentals from Moldva (Northwestern Transylvania) are found on this CD. Mariska Miskolczy and the Eszterlanc zenekar (band) express a kaleidoscope of feelings through the violin and voice as they play the unexpected trills and half-step note variations which are the hallmark of Transylvanian music. I often find myself singing lyrics or humming their music long after the CD has stopped playing. This is one group whose CDs I have not yet found in any music shop but when I do, I will buy the first one I see! Hearing "The shepherds live like this" (Flaman-Hezso Zither Duo, "A Juhaszok igy elnek") and "The Nyiregyhazi Hussars" (Szeles Andras, "A Nyiregyhazi Hussaroke") one reminisces about an era that is long gone. One vicariously lives the experiences about which the balladeers sing. The music and songs on this CD confirm what Hungarians have always known: that Hungarian traditional music appeals to the heart and soul. It can make you sing and laugh, it can make you weep and cry ... in either case capturing life to the fullest! This CD is a worthy addition to anyone's of Hungarian music. |
