Extract from sleeve notes:
"From among the gypsy or classical music players propelled by folk bands or orchestras, there are some who helped promote and consecrate an instrument that had not been at all traditional in our old folk music, namely the accordion. One of the greatest artists of this kind was
Marcel Budala.
He was born on July 6, 1926 in a family where the mother came from the south of the country while the father came from the north-eastern part of the country. Neither parent had had anything to do with gypsy music; in Bucharest, young
Marcel took piano lessons during elementary school. It was not difficult for him to pass from piano to accordion, an instrument that would prove useful for him during his army years. In 1946, he entered the folk music band of the unit where he was a conscript. In 1948,
Marcel Budala was one of the first players of the newly established folk music orchestra of the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Society with which he would play for four decades.
Despite its absence from traditional folk music, the accordion was no longer truly a novelty in the third decade of the last century, when it can be traced in small gypsy music bands from Wallachia. It followed in the tracks of the clarinet, which had been used in such bands since the 19th century.
Accordion players were challenged to adapt their instrument and to develop techniques able to render all tonal subtleties of folk music played in the past, initially on the Pan flute and bagpipes and later on the violin. We are talking here mainly of the solo accordion players who were quite scarce at the beginning; as part of an orchestra, the accordion would mainly have a harmony support role.
That was the moment in time when Marcel Budala started his artistic career with the orchestra of the Radio Society; he brought a style, a technique and a repertoire that could nowadays be considered classical in the folk music played on accordion for dance, concerts or drinking parties. The many tours in the country made him famous. In the 7th and 8th decade of the last century, Cimpoiul [Bagpipes] and Sarba de la Trestiana [Round Dance of Trestiana] played by
Marcel Budala were among the most demanded songs on the shows that played music on
request for radio listeners..."
