The Great Voices of Bulgaria

'Anthology'

(UBP045)

An anthology of the best Bulgarian choir songs sung by Women's, Men's and mixed choirs. Some tracks with accordion accompaniment.

'When you hear a Bulgarian folk song, you are astounded, chills creep up your spine, and your heart seems to skip a beat. The women from the Southeastern Balkans, regardless of their age, have an amazing vocal power, although it is more a question of vibrations and vocal technique rather than decibels. Bulgarian people understood a long time ago that the human voice is much more expressive in song than it could be in speech. Therefore, singing has been given top priority in the Bulgarian tradition of artistic expression. The perfection that lies at the base of traditional folklore took decades of hard work and was passed down from generation to generation for centuries on end.

The Women’s Choir of Sofia is a group of professional singers which has existed for more than 35 years, directed since 1980 by Zdravko Mihaylov. It is thanks to this conductor that its repertoire has expanded to include the whole range of traditional Bulgarian music composed with modern harmony and polyphony, or based on themes taken from folk songs.
The women possess a particular vocal technique, which uses the natural voice production supported by the neck muscles and not by the diaphragm. This “primitive” singing with its strange sounds, whose origin goes back more than ten centuries, is characteristic of Slavic countries. The beauty of the timbre in all registers, the fullness and exactness of intonation, and the power and strength of expression, contribute to the ensemble’s great musical value.

Shimmering costumes, rich in embroidery and color along with a strict and precise stage presentation, which is nevertheless full of joy and warmth, brings out an extremely rich musical tradition.
Because of its high artistic achievement, and the originality of its repertoire, the ensemble has successfully taken part in many concerts and festivals in France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Belgium, Israel and elsewhere.'
