The Rhodope Kaba Trio is known for its pure timbre, strong voice, and characteristic sounding. One feels an expressive drive and emotional depth, typical for the Rhodope style of singing. Characteristic for the Trio is the singing in a low register with a timbre corresponding to the so called kaba sound - a thick, soft, fluffy sound - the sound of the kaba bagpipe - a favourite musical instrument of the Rhodope region.
Every word and sound conveys Rhodope warmth and depth to feeling. It is said of popular folk singers that their singing actually is "two voices from one throat", while in the songs included here you can hear three voices, as if all coming from one throat, with a fine unity of timbre. Whoever has heard the bells (chanove ) in the Rhodopes will realize how much voices resemble the bells - they are strong in sound and penetrating. Singing can merge and blend voices so that we reach an instrumental voice sounding, as if it were the deep background sound of the rouchilo of the Rhodope kaba bagpipe ("Gaydine sviryat").
It is a pleasant surprise for listeners to hear Ivelina Balcheva - a jazz- singer, who draws all the depth and emotion in folk songs, conveying it in her singing with her own idiom. She follows Rhodope melodies and renders them in her ability for improvisation, building up her own melody based on the folk song with new colour and nuances. Balcheva's voice thus becomes part of the voices of the Rhodope mountains, it blends with them, enhancing its songs with a characteristic touch.
