Kalinka Vulcheva
'The Dobroudja Nightingale'
(OFFCD00104)
On this release Kalinka Vulcheva, known as 'the Dobroudja Nightingale',
sings solo her own collection of traditional and self-penned Bulgarian songs recorded live at the Abbaye du Relec in Brittany.
Previously Kalinka was a member of the original folk choir known
internationally as 'Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares'.
Now residing in the UK Kalinka was born in Doubroudja (N.E. Bulgaria)
where she learnt much of her repertoire from her great grandmother. As
well as singing solo, as on this release, she has also featured in the Bulgarian traditional groups
'Loznitsa' and 'Bisseri' as well as with Anglo-Bulgarian crossover band 'Vulcheva-Jenkins
Incident'.
'One of the greats of the Bulgarian voice... powerfully impressive.'
Folk Roots fRoots magazine UK
Vulcheva carries the drama, passion and sadness of her region's history in her quivering, tender voice. It's little wonder that, singing utterly without accompaniment, she clearly held the audience in the palm of her hand for this live recording - This album of of self-written songs and traditional numbers arranged by Vulcheva herself deserves to raise her profile.
Revolutions
Once you're hooked you'll find it immensely compelling, marvelling at Kalinka's astounding, matchless control of her voice, within which there's a variety of expressive nuance.
David Kidman - Traditional Music Maker
Almost heartbreakingly beautiful soprano - she sounds so strong on this live solo recording that one feels she could sing for days without stopping - only the greatest of singers can stand comparison to this amazing performer - ravishing vocal quality and astonishing technical command one can listen to her as if to a great instrumentalist but most impressive is the way she somehow projects the meaning of the songs through the language barrier. A stunning disc.
