'Authentic Bulgarian Folk Songs'

'These are eight village women and they call themselves ‘the Bistritsa
Grannies’. Throughout the years they have spent their young years
together, have shared both happy and happy moments, worked together during
harvesting and hoeing time and sung and danced at wedding parties in the
village square. Their singing is impetuous, primitive and powerful. They
perform their local three-voiced songs from the Shoppe region in an
authentic manner, the way their ancestors have done for centuries on end.
These songs abound in sharp dissonant sound combinations, which are
different from anything that can be heard in Bulgarian folk music
elsewhere. This singing is also unique and striking for its trying vocal
technique, such cannot be mastered in any music school.'

'This really is roots music - complicated, uncompromising, and far from the sweetened harmonies of the big 'Mystere' choirs. There are no instruments, no dynamic shadings, nothing more than the austere sound of chants above a drone. Yet, as you listen, subtle details start to emerge. Some are compelling dance songs, some make use of rich and clashing dissonances, some are simply unison melodies; others are highly ornamented and yet others dissolve into shrieks and falsetto yelping.'
