From sleeve notes:
"Enjoyment in music can last but a single moment. Compositions highlighting such
an attitude are most often described as music of the moment. This music has
always been present - in the many divertissements, serenades, marches and dances
composed by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Grieg and Dvorak. Often going beyond the moment, it substantiates the claim that it is
better to enjoy true music in a short entertaining song than in quasi-serious
cantatas or sonatas.
Bora Dugic is one of the very rare performers who celebrate music in a most true
and sincere way. Through his aesthetic enjoyment in the play of tones,
virtuosity, clear and distinct sound of each tone, elegant and rounded phrasing,
and an unsurpassed 'ear' for the authentic sources of pastoral, Dugi6 reaches
unprecedented heights of artistry, achieving an equilibrium between the
archetype of the East, Serbian-Balkan, Sumadija-type pipe playing and the mastery of
the French-European flute playing. With his artistry, Dugi6 transcends all kinds
of „sweet feelings" (Nietsche), sentimental idylls and kitsch inevitably present in
popular music.
Both in the East and the West, the pipe has always been regarded as an
instrument of divine origin. It gave birth to music, say the philosophers of music
(Bloch) and the ancient Hellenic myths. According to the legend, Pan, the god of
shepherds and their flocks, pursued the nymph Syririx who, finding no other way
of escape, jumped into the river and was transformed into a reed. It was from
the stem of this reed that Pan carved his instrument and played his first sound
dream, a yearning call for unattained and lost beauty. Hence the call is the
essence and sound expressiveness the essential in the art of pipe and flute playing,
and in music in general. The art of Bora Dugic comes from this
arche-source. Romanians have their Pan, Zamfir, the master of the panpipes. Yugoslavs, Serbs
and people from Sumadija also have their Pan, Dugic. Born in 1949 near
Kragujevac, Dugic is a master whose artistry is universal. The sound of his merry pipe
mingles easily with the music of the world."
MIODRAG AZANJAC
'... Among the flute players there are beginners, masters and grand masters, but there is only one magician who, by his artistry, succeeded in turning the shepherd's flute into a great
art - Bora Dugić.'
Zoran Hristić, composer
'... There are people for which we can say that they are guests at the world's feasts.
Bora Dugic is one of them. Little sound of Bora's flute resembling a spinning top mixes with the great music of the world.'
Miodrag Azanjac, professor at The Faculty of Music and Art, Belgrade
'... Bora Dugic performing style captures and impresses, before all, by an internal energy, strong feelings, noble tones, faultless technique and also by warm performances, not only in solo compositions, but also in orchestra pieces to which the player adds colorful traits...'
