Formed in 1995, Sondorgo play Yugoslav (Croatian, Serbian, Macedonian) Bulgarian and Greek folk music. The members of the band are young people, being the sons of members of the Vujicsics ensemble.

Typically, much of this music is played on the 'tambura', which is a musical relative of the lute. The tambura comes in various sizes and is usually played at a ferocious pace.

After playing small but regular gigs, it wasn’t long before they were playing in more serious venues, and have performed together with the Vujicsics Ensemble and Márta Sebestyén.

From band:
"The Söndörgő Ensemble was established in Szentendre, Hungary, in 1995. It was on the basis of our family tradition and due to our attraction to Southern Slav folk music that we set the objective of cultivating this particularly rich and valuable tradition. It was during our secondary education years that we got to know each other and began playing music together. We strive to perform archaic folk music in a concert setup and to instrumentalise it in a way that is true to both reality and tradition. We are currently studying the folk music collected by great Hungarian researchers of music such as Béla Bartók and Tihamér Vujicsics, as well as the extant Southern Slav folk music tradition.

Our ensemble is classified as a tambur band occasionally complemented with accordeon and flute.
To perform melodies from the Balkans, we sound various wind instruments such as clarinet, kaval and saxophone, a variety of drums like tarabuka and tapan, as well as a wealth of string instruments, e.g. litarka.

From 1998 until 2000, we attended Mr. Gábor Eredics’s lessons on chamber music at the Budakalász Music School.

In 2000, we finished first in the Second Folk Music Competition of the Hungarian State Radio and were awarded the Special Prize of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and the Association of Folk Dance Clubs.
In autumn of 2001, our first CD entitled ’Oj stari’ was released. Then, from 2001 until 2004 we carried on our studies at the Secondary School of Music in Vác, specialising in folk music.

In September of 2001, we attended Mr. Michel Montanaro’s course on improvisation as part of the Eurofolk Master Course in Italy.

Since 2002, we have had an opportunity to perform music along with the Vujicsics Ensemble for two plays at Vigszínház, one of the finest theatres in Budapest, one titled ’A Legend About The Horse’ by Tolstoy, the other entitled ’The Overseer’ by Gogol.

Our performance in the film ’Vagabond’ directed by György Szomjas was presented in the 2003 Movie Review. Afterwards we joined Vagabond Band, a band created from the bands performing in the film, for a nationwide concert tour in Hungary. Our piece of music, ’Ratevka’, of the said film, too was included in a CD of selected Eastern European movie pieces. Since 2002, we have been holding the Söndörgő Festival in Szentendre, in August.

It was in April of 2003 that we founded the Söndörgő Association with the aim of making known Southern Slav music to the largest possible extent."
