'If you haven't heard this CD: YOU ARE MISSING SOMETHING BIG TIME!'
Erika B

Besh o droM was founded in 1999. The band plays Balkan and Romanian gypsy and Middle Eastern traditional music in their unique interpretation, mixing various styles and musical background.  Most of the tunes they play are traditional ones and they take the liberty to use any tunes they really like and enjoy.

Their first concert in Budapest was a great success and they have become extremely popular in Hungary since than.  They play at Hungary's best festivals, clubs and cultural venues, always to great audiences. Wherever Besh o droM plays, their audiences instantly get on their feet and dance.

Besh o droM in gypsy language means "sit on the road" literally, but its real meaning is "follow your path".  It is also a wordplay in Hungarian meaning "I am rolling…" (a cigarette).  Besh o droM's first CD entitled "Macsó hímzés" (again a world play, 'Macho embroidery' in literal translation).

Besh o droM teamed up with DJs and other musicians involved in electronic music to mix their ethnic roots with modern technologies.  They call this project Space Besh O droM.  Mixing traditional ethnic tunes with "techno" results wild and stormy dance music that is loved by festival and club audiences.  Although the Space project is a new one, the band has already toured major cities and festivals throughout Europe.

"Best moment in my musical history is seeing the band play our Ballroom (Glastonbury)"
Chris Tofu, promoter, Continental drifts

Superb Balkan Musical Feast!

Bring out the ouzo, let's have a gyros sandwich and a tempting baklava dessert!!! Let's improvise some taksims and dance to the Turkish and Greek music. Besh o Drom, although a Hungarian band, puts you in just this kind of mood. They play Balkan Brass Band music, Turkish, Greek, and Romani muisc just like (dare I say "better than"?) the natives (there may be a few gypsies in the band, it's hard to tell, in the photos most of them look Caucasian to me). The intensity of the music, and oblivious joy and passion of the musicians and vocalists are just begging to be heard. If you haven't heard this CD: YOU ARE MISSING SOMETHING BIG TIME!

Agnes Szalnoki, the female vocalist, has a pure, clear, fresh, and flawless vocal style, which contrasts beautifully with the translated lyrics of the Turkish and Greek songs. Her voice is an amazing counterpoint to the sometimes sad, sometimes hopeful, sometimes wishful, occasionally wistful Balkan melodies and lyrics. THIS BAND HAS FOUND "IT": the very definition of what pleases those of us who have a passion for Balkan style. The band uses instruments such as, the ney, kaval, darbuk, hammered dulcimer, tapan, along with modern instruments: alto sax, guitar, bass and trumpet to the best effect.

The improvisations and embellishments are RIGHT ON!!! It is obvious they LOVE WHAT THEY DO! I can only ask: "Where is the next album?" The fertile soil of Central (Eastern) Europe is producing some of the most exciting music in Europe and I dare say, the world. Taste the music, experience the pleasure. I guarantee, you will ask for seconds!!!
